Love Potion #9 Day Is Almost Here!

Every year, one particularly wonderful old Spellmaker recipe gets its moment in the kitchen.

September 9 is almost here, which means it is almost time for Love Potion #9.

Love Potion #9 is one of those old magical recipes that is part spell, part kitchen magick, part folklore, and part Spellmaker history. Traditionally, it is prepared on the ninth day of the ninth month at the ninth hour, which means 9:00 a.m. on September 9.

This year, September 9 falls on a Wednesday.

And this recipe is extremely committed to its theme.

There are nine ingredients. Nine pink votive candles. Nine stirs. Nine minutes of simmering. Nine breaths over the finished potion. And finally, the names of nine goddesses associated with love are spoken over it.

Apparently, once our magical ancestors chose the number nine, nobody was permitted to show restraint. 😂

I have a particular fondness for this recipe because it has been around Spellmaker for many years. We even still have a photograph of me making a great big batch of Love Potion #9 on 09/09/09, because honestly, how could I possibly have allowed that date to pass without doing it?

The Traditional Love Potion

The traditional recipe also contains something that is worth discussing rather than pretending was never there.

Traditionally, Love Potion #9 was described as something that could be mixed into the intended person's food or drink without their knowledge. That reflects the older form of the recipe and the way love potions were historically presented.

That idea appears over and over in old love-magick traditions. The beloved was not generally sitting across the table saying, “Yes, please enchant my beverage.”

That was rather the point. 😂 I am not saying that if the secret way is what you want to do, that that is wrong especially if you know your person is not allergic to any of the ingredients!  But there can be another way to use it!

A Modern Way to Use an Old Tradition

In modern practice, we might approach the idea of the potion being something done together.

Rather than secretly giving it to someone, consider sharing it openly with your beloved as part of a ritual, meal, or special moment together.

Prepare a romantic meal. Light the candles. Talk about what you want to strengthen between you. Share the potion intentionally for love, passion, closeness, affection, or recommitment.

Used that way, Love Potion #9 can become something the two of you intentionally share to empower, strengthen, and celebrate the love already between you.

I actually think that gives this old recipe a beautiful second life, and another way to use it!

Get Your Ingredients Ready

If you want to make Love Potion #9 this year, now is the time to start gathering what you need.

The traditional recipe includes sweet red wine, basil leaves, red rose petals, cloves, apple seeds, vanilla, strawberry juice, apple juice, and ginseng. There is also a non-alcoholic substitution on the recipe page for anyone who does not drink alcohol.

And, naturally, you will need nine pink votive candles.
