Balance and Bliss-What we learn from the Autumn Equinox
Hello spellmaker readers!! I hope that the September spirit has greeted you with peace and happiness. As we approach the second harvest festival of the Pagan year, Mabon, or in astrological terms, the Autumnal Equinox, the days grow noticeably shorter and the stillness of dark begins to take hold.
In the wheel of the year, one season always heralds the arrival of a new phase; changes take place in the natural world around us, and within us, our spirits follow suit. The autumn equinox is the precipice of the shadow half of the year, when daylight and nighttime fall in equal measure. We bid farewell, for now, to the sun drenched days of summer and celebrate the harvest, simultaneously preparing for winters inward journey.
In many earth based faiths, Mabon is considered a time of balance, and the symbolism is all around. The sun enters the sign of Libra, which fittingly is represented by the scales.
In this time of balance between night and day, light and dark, bright and shadow-what part of your life perhaps could use some balance? If the long days of summer meant endless swims in the lake or pool, picnics at the park, or late summer nights with loved ones, perhaps the darkness is calling you to spend some quiet time at home, feathering your nest. If you've been working overtime like crazy, maybe it's time for a spa day, a nice long bath, or a weekend where you never even change out of pajamas, binge watch something you love, and sleep til your hearts content!!
The dark need not be something spooky or creepy (although far be it from me to tell you thats a no-no!). The longer and cooler nights could mean taking time to rest, to connect more one on one with whatever spiritual endeavors soothe your soul, to create something for your home that brings you joy and solace. Your inner voice is allowed, in this quiet, to whisper to you what you need the most.
Taking the plunge into the darker half of the year is the perfect time for baking, cooking (soup season-woot woot!), and making your home a place where you feel cozy comfy, and contented.
Here in the northeast, where we know winter is long and we are going to be indoors nearly all the time soon, Autumn becomes the last hurrah of sorts. We go out and enjoy the crunch of colorful leaves underfoot, the patches of earth awash in bright orange pumpkins, and the whiff of cinnamon and apple cider in the air, but in Autumn, our hearts ultimately seem to come home. A dear friend once told me "YOU are your home." So right now is a beneficial time to really reconnect with yourself, and put some focus there on the deepest of levels.
I dont know many magical people who dont feel the pull of that inner witch when the fall rolls around. If you feel like youve been all work and no play, then it may be time to light up the night with your own magick!! Stop telling yourself youre too busy, too tired, or being too weird!! Use that energy like a cosmic gift in any way that stirs up your cauldron!! Put on your favorite witchy tunes, break out your favorite magical tools, don your most eccentric clothing, and get downright mystical!! We only have this season once a year-make the very most of it!!
I truly hope this touches someone out there and inspires you to enjoy this splendid and beautiful season. From my little corner of the world to yours, Blessed Mabon, Happy Harvest, and I wish you an autumn filled with so much love!!

Khouzhan Morgan
